(English text in blue) Beschrijvingen van patronen kunnen heel ingewikkeld lijken, maar als u er eenmaal een beetje aan gewend bent komt u er wel uit. Zeker als er ook nog een patroontekening gegeven is. Er zijn twee manieren om een patroon voor frivolité te noteren. Er is de geschreven manier, waarin stap voor stap wordt opgeschreven wat te doen en er is het diagram. Reading patterns Descriptions of patterns can look very complecated, but once you are used to it you can figure it out. Especially if a diagram is also given. There are two ways to note a pattern for tatting. First is the written way in which step by step is noted what to do and there is the diagram.  In oude patronen wordt a lles achter elkaar genoteerd, zoals in dit voorbeeld uit 1935 van Anne Orr. (De originele uitgave is in het Engels. DS betekent double stitches, ofwel dubbele knoop)  De uitgelichtte zin betekent: maak een ring van 5 dubbele knopen, 3 picots gescheiden door 5 dubbele knopen, 5 dubbele knopen, sluiten

 I'm never bored, I'll take my shuttle, wind it with thread, not being subtle. Counting, one, two, three, four, five and six. Some beads are added in the mix. I make rings and chains all day with double stitches, all the way. I add a picot here and there and sometimes even everywhere I make doilies, big and small. Edgings, collars, I make them all. In only white, or full of color. When one is done I'll make another. So stitch after double stitch some undoing when there's a glitch, beautiful things come out of my hands. I am the queen in my tattingland.
